Betty Sue Empson

Virginia Beach - Betty Sue Empson, 69, of Virginia Beach, passed away on February 26, 2014 at Virginia Beach General Hospital. She was surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Beckley, West Virginia on November 26, 1944. Mrs. Empson spent her early childhood in Beckley and Ghent, West Virginia. She lived in Falls Church, Virginia for 35 years before moving to Virginia Beach in 2005. Betty worked in the Federal Government for many years, including the National Park Service and Department of interior. She was full of love, life, and laughter.

Mrs. Empson is preceded in death by her husband, Byron Paul Empson; parents, Sherman and Opal Shumate and her son, Denzel L. Empson.

She is survived by her daughters, Deniece Empson Cheri, and her son, Byron Charles Empson; a special grandson, John Joseph "Joey" Cheri, IV; her sister, Patricia Ann Doleman and her brother Sherman Lee Shumate. Also left to cherish her memory are her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, special family friends, Melinda, Stephanie and Chris Lopez; Millicent, Scott, Andrew, and Dakota Baez; Cindy Forbes, and hoards of other family and friends.

A celebration of Betty's life will be held Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m., at Old Donation Episcopal Church, officiated by Reverend David Shumate, Reverend Cecil McKinney and Reverend Robert J. Randall. Entombment will follow at the Chapel of Peace of Princess Anne Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Joey Cheri, Chris Lopez, Toni Hoover, Jonathan Ziegler, Emily McGowan, Michael Haley and Andrew Baez, with Tom Tauber and Scott Baez as Honorary Pallbearers.
