J. Dudley Godwin Jr.
Virginia Beach - James Dudley Godwin Jr., 79, went peacefully to be with the Lord in Glory September 9, 2013 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
A native of Cofield, N.C., he was the son of the late Allie Burch Godwin and James Dudley Godwin Sr. He served in the Army National Guard during the Korean Conflict and later completed business courses at Michigan State.
His career was the Grocery business. He managed stores throughout Tidewater for Colonial Stores and Big Star, and later opened and operated Star Food Mart stores in Virginia Beach and Bayshore Markets on the Eastern Shore. Dudley was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, serving as Deacon and Church Treasurer. He was a long-term member of the Lions Club and served as District Governor. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish.
He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy (Dot) Myers Godwin and by his brother Ivan. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia (Pat) Savage Godwin. Survivors include Ivan's wife Shirley, brother Fred and his wife Kaye; sister Edna Groening and husband Bill; and sister Betty Levesque and husband Roland, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Left to cherish Dudley's memory are longtime friends Marion and Christine Chambliss, their children Joan Chambliss Mann, and Steve and wife Becky, parents of Dudley's three godchildren - Allison, Kelsey and Jeffrey Chambliss.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church with the Rev. Prentis McGoldrick officiating. The family will receive friends in the reception hall immediately following the service.
The body will be donated to medical science. A graveside service will be conducted at a later date at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Bridgewater Virginia.
