Ophelia M. Baum-Smith
Norfolk - Ophelia Smith went to be with the Lord on September 11, 2013 with her loving family at her bed side.
She was born October 21, 1918, in Wanchese, N.C. Ophelia was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Lillie Baum and three brothers, Wayland W. Baum, Somers Baum, and Talmadge Baum, and her loving husband, Walter R. Smith. She is survived by her devoted daughter and son, Linda F. Millard of Norfolk and Walter (Buddy) R. Smith Jr. (Lynn) of Chesapeake.
Left to cherish her memory is her beloved seven grandchildren: David D. Millard Jr. (Debbie) of Va. Beach; Michael R. Millard (Judy) of Va. Beach; Dawn M. Millard of Norfolk; Daniel K. Millard (Kristen) of Va. Beach; Dana E. Anners (Scott) of Dothan, Ala.; Brad R. Smith of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and Tracey L. Quales (Richard) of Norfolk. She is also survived by her loving great-grandchildren Tara, Cory, Grant, Jordan, Madison, Kaylin, Karlie, and Evan Millard; Justin and Dylan Quales; Maddie, Andrew, and Will Anners. She was a loving and devoted mother and Granny to all of her extended family.
Ophelia was a current member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and former member of Ferebee-Halsted UMC. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She was a decendent of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Keepers Association. She was devoted to her Christian beliefs and encouraged her family to follow her example as she followed the Lord. Ophelia enjoyed gardening, feeding the birds and squirrels in her backyard, camping and her time at the Outer Banks and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. She was a devoted fan of her grandchildren's activities at the Azalea Little League and charter member of the Tidewater Athletic Club.
The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
