Shirley Roberts Obituary
She was predeceased by her parents, Virginia and John Lloyd Hanson; brother George Lloyd Hanson and sister Doris Hanson Sutherland. Surviving family includes her devoted and loving husband of 63 years, Richard "Dick" David Roberts; daughters Catherine Roberts Dodge of Virginia Beach, Dr. Helen Elizabeth Roberts of Virginia Beach, and Caroline Roberts Darby (Patrick) of Birmingham, Alabama; and grandchildren Richard Townsend Dodge, Andrew Richard Roberts, Patrick Roberts Darby, Helen Catherine Darby, and John Thomas Darby.
Shirley was born on April 29, 1935 in Lynchburg, VA. Shirley and Dick met on the shores of Virginia Beach in 1954 when they were both visiting on a college break. It was love at first sight. She graduated from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1957 and was married three months later. She taught English and History in the public school system for several years.
Shirley was active in her community and in numerous civic organizations, including First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk where she was a deacon and elder, and the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk. She loved floral arranging and was a member of The Garden Club of Norfolk. Shirley and Dick shared a love of travel, art, and antiques, but her primary passion was her family.
A private graveside service will be limited to immediate family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the charity of your choice.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I know what an amazing lady Shirley is and how much she loved all of you. I will cherish all the days at First Presbyterian, the great dinner parties, our Mah Jong games-so many memories with a beautiful, funny, caring lady. Your family will be in our prayers.

I am so sorry to learn of Mrs. Roberts’ passing. I remember her so well from my years of growing up at First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Roberts always had a welcoming smile on her face for me. She was a dear friend to my mother, Jackie Hamilton. I remember she hosted with Mrs. Slaughter a lovely engagement party for my first marriage. The party was so lovely. I have Mr. Roberts, Cathy, Helen and Caroline in my thoughts and prayers as you grieve your mother’s death. Sincerely, Kathleen Gerwien
