Clara Kennedy Holton Obituary
On December 4th, Clara Kennedy Holton, 86, passed away at her home in Kitty Hawk, NC with her daughter Robin and son-in-law Michael by her side. Born in Suffolk, VA on January 8, 1932, she was the daughter of the late William S. Kennedy and Alice Coggins Kennedy of Chesapeake and she was a 1949 graduate of Kempsville High School. After living most of her life in Chesapeake, VA, in early 2018 she re-located to Kitty Hawk, NC with her beloved cat Buddy where she enjoyed the fresh beach air, working the daily crossword puzzle, shopping, reading and making new friends. Forever the business woman, in the 1960’s Clara was the co-owner of a small construction company based in Elizabeth City, NC. The 1970’s found her busy operating two freelance businesses, one retouching photograph negatives for several photography studios in Norfolk, VA, and the other a bookkeeping service for small area businesses. She became co-owner of Norfolk Tent Co. in the early 1980’s where she’d been employed as their comptroller. Upon her sale of that company, and her retirement from it, she and her husband Buck expanded their antique business, Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe, that they opened in 1978 to become owner/operators of Attic Treasures Antique Mall in Norfolk. She was a long-time member of the Tidewater Business and Professional Women’s organization and served as the chapter president from 1978 to 1979, and was awarded Hampton Roads Business Woman of the Year in 1986. She was also a long-time member of the Women of the Moose where she worked her way up through the ranks to earn all three degrees: Friendship, Star Recorder and Collegiate. Through that organization, she served on many committees over the years and volunteered much of her time to charitable fund raising. She will be missed by her five children, Robin Campbell Rizzo (Michael), David Gerald Holton (Debbie), Nancy Curtis (Greg), Robin Webber (Russ), Susan Austin (Barry), 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother James Carroll Kennedy (Phyllis). She was preceded in death by husbands Robert Raymond “Bobby” Campbell, Jr. in 1974 and Gerald Franklin "Buck" Holton in 2018, and a brother, William S. Kennedy, Jr. The family will accept visitors at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home - 6568 Indian River Road in Virginia Beach, with services following at 11:00 AM. The immediate family will gather on Tuesday, December 11th for Clara’s burial at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Virginia Beach. Condolences may be offered to the family at: www.hollomon-brown.com
