Debra Lynn Solimando Obituary
62, of Powhatan passed away February 7, 2019. Debra was a strong woman of faith who truly appreciated the beauty and wonder of all God’s creations. She was highly regarded as a dedicated Exceptional Education Teacher, who provided excellent services to preschool aged children and their families. Debra was also known by all to be a strong advocate for the compassionate care of animals. She would frequently take in any stray cat or dog and she would not hesitate to directly intervene whenever she witnessed cruel treatment of an animal. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rother and Evelyn Stanley. She is survived by her husband, Michael Solimando and his children, Jamie Solimando and Jon Solimando; brother, Thomas Edward Stanley and his wife, Deborah Thorne Stanley; sister, Sharon Webb; father-in-law, John F. Solimando; sister-in-law, Marilyn Larsen and her husband, Russell Larsen; nephews, Ronnie E. Webb II and his wife, Erica M. Webb and Michael Christopher Stanley and his wife, Sheila Stanley; great niece, Ashlee Nicole Stanley; and last but certainly not least her cats, Frank and Mr. Wilson. Debra grew up in the Chester area where she attended Thomas Dale High School. Her teaching career began in the Tidewater area after she obtained a Master’s Degree in Education at Old Dominion University. While in Tidewater, Debra served as a teacher both in the classroom and also as a home visitor. Debra then relocated to Richmond to be with her family. She joined the staff of Richmond Public Schools where she continued as a teacher of preschool children with developmental delays. Debra enjoyed her work both as a classroom teacher and later as an itinerant teacher providing consultative services to special needs children in regular class placements. Her family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2019 at Bliley’s-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd. A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Manakin Episcopal Church, 985 Huguenot Trail, Midlothian, Va. 23113. The mass will be followed by Interment of Debra’s cremated remains in the church memorial garden and a reception in the church hall. Debra’s family encourages donations to be made in her memory to the Richmond Animal League and/or to the Cullather Brain Tumor Center which provided invaluable help to Deb and the family.
