Suffolk - Duane Wombolt went to his heavenly reward on Sunday July 08, 2018 after a brief illness.

He was born in Red Oak Iowa January 18, 1934 to the late George and Genevieve (Swanson) Wombolt.

He is survived by his loving wife Edith (Edie) Meiggs Wombolt. His two children Christopher Wombolt of Vail CO, daughter Kathryn Wombolt of King and Queen County Virginia. Grandson Geoff Taylor of Richmond VA. Sister in Laws Amy Meiggs and Von Harrell of Knightdale NC, Brother in law David Meiggs and fiancée Kim Carbon of Elizabeth City NC. His sister Jean Glascock of Webster City Iowa. A special nephew Matthew Meiggs of Elizabeth City NC and nephews Andrew and Mark Glascock of Webster City Iowa. Niece Hayley Schiebel of Boston MA and numerous Iowa cousins.

He was a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Iowa Medical School class of 1962. He completed his internship, residency and Fellowship in Renal Disease at the Ohio State University.

After post- doctoral training he was on the staff of Creighton University Medical School, Omaha NE. Remembering how he enjoyed the Tidewater area while serving in the United States Army after a tour of duty in the Korean War, he decided to take a position as Associate Professor of Medicine in what is now the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). He also served as the acting Chairman and then Professor of Medicine at EVMS. As the area's first Nephrologist he served as Director - Division of Nephrology of what is now Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH). He also served as director of Renal Dialysis at SNGH. He was instrumental in starting dialysis and the renal transplant program at SNGH. He took care of hundreds of patients who had kidney disease.

In 1980 he found the Nephrology practice, Nephrology Associates of Tidewater and served as President until his retirement in 2005. He founded Clinical Research Associates of Tidewater in 1983 and served as Medical Director until the time of his death.

He was a Fellow of American College of Physicians, certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (Nephrology), and was one of the first physicians to be certified as a Certified Principal Investigator (CPI) by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators.

Medical society memberships include the American Society of Nephrology, International Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation serving as the Kidney Foundation of Tidewater President 1975- 1980, the American Society of Artificial Organs, the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of Virginia, Norfolk Academy of Medicine, American Heart Association, Council of Kidney and Cardiovascular Disease, American Federation for Clinical Research, Tidewater Heart Association, Royal Society of Physicians, American College of Physicians, Associates of Clinical Pharmacology, and the Association of Clinical Research Professionals.

He served on the national board of Renal Physicians Associates (RPA)- House of Delegates and Board of Directors, on the state board of RPA as President. The Southeastern Regional Organ Procurement Foundation, Southeastern Dialysis and Transplant Association, ESRD Network Coordinating Council of Virginia. He was appointed by the Governor of Virginia to serve of the Virginia Renal Advisory Committee in 1976.

He authored numerous abstracts, medical papers, and medical text book chapters. He was Principal Investigator for over 700 clinical research trials.

He was a past member of the Broad Bay Country Club and the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club. He was a current member of the Wintergreen Resort and Club and a member of the Mountain Homesteaders.

He enjoyed golf, tennis, skiing, fishing and boating when not working.

He was a past Elder and member of Bayside Presbyterian Church and a member of the Rockfish Presbyterian Church.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Rockfish Presbyterian Church, 5016 Rockfish Valley Highway, officiated by Dr. Louie Andrews. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
