Norfolk - Eugene Cooper went to Glory on March 17, 2014. He was born July 16, 1935 in Florence, South Carolina. He was predeceased by his wife, Willa L. Cooper; daughter, Regina Bond; his mother, Julia (Cooper) Harris and his father, Dehumpery Taylor. He was raised in Paterson, New Jersey by his mother and his step father, Deacon Henry T. Harris. He was an Army Reservist and discharged honorably before joining the Navy. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars where he received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation with Gallantry Cross, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He also received the National Defense Service Medal and several Meritorious Unit Commendations. After serving 22 years in the U.S. Navy, he retired to Norfolk where he would spend the rest of his life with the love of life, "Dolly". He would begin his second career with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he would retire after 20 years of service.

He is survived by his daughter, Angela Hamilton (Vincent) of Chesapeake, VA; granddaughter, Shaia Hubbard and great grandson, Christian Funches of Chesapeake, VA; brothers, Rev. Thomas Harris and Douglas Harris of Patterson, NJ; sister, Helene Harris of Paterson, NJ and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

A funeral service will be held, 11am, Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, 1057 Kennedy St. Norfolk, VA. Interment will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, VA.
