Gloria Isaacs Wilson Obituary
Gloria Isaacs Wilson

Norfolk - Gloria Isaacs Wilson passed away in Norfolk, VA on September 9, 2018. She was born during the height of the great depression (1932) in Donora, PA to parents Martha (Moosey) and Leo Isaacs, the only girl in an Arab-American family of eight children. She graduated in 1949 from Donora Senior High School and in 1952 from Allegheny General Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA. She had a full career as Registered Nurse working first at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC, then at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC and finally more than 15 years at Norfolk General Hospital. After retirement, she served as school nurse at Butts Road Primary in Chesapeake, an assignment she singled out as her happiest.

She was, in addition, a full-time mother to three sons and, for many years, active in faculty wives' organizations at Old Dominion University. Passionate about cooking, she also shared with her husband a love of European travel (especially in France). Together, they spent two summers in Paris, one in Brittany, three summers in Pau in the South of France, a summer in Provence, two summers in the Loire Valley region and one in the Auvergne. Her time abroad also included a summer in Rome with her brother and his family, three weeks in Portugal, a year in Rabat, Morocco where her husband was teaching and six months in Leon, Spain while her husband pursued a Fulbright teaching fellowship. Their many visits in France led to joyful friendships with many French families that lasted her lifetime.

Throughout all her life, she was unfailingly energetic, cheerful, compassionate and considerate of others. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Louis, Richard, and George. She is survived by her husband of 60 years Jack, sons Arthur and Paul (of Norfolk), Eliot (of Golden, CO), two grandchildren, Anna and Lyla, and four brothers: Dr. Thomas Isaacs, Dr. William Isaacs, Dr. Jerome Isaacs, and Larry Isaacs. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to count.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (www.nami.org).

Family and friends are invited to share memories, sign the online guestbook and gather information about the memorial service at www.hdoliver.com.
