Henry V. Shriver NORFOLK - Henry Vannier Shriver, 84, passed away to be with his Heavenly Father Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011 in a local hospital. He was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk and was the son of the late Paul Rawlings Shriver and Helen Vannier Shriver. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Rawlings Shriver Jr. Mr. Shriver attended JEB Stuart School, Granby High School, and received his master's degree in architecture from VPI. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a self-employed architect with the Architectural firm of Shriver and Holland Associates, Norfolk, which he started in 1956. He was a member, former Finance Committee member and trustee of Park Place United Methodist Church in Norfolk. He was also a member of The Rotary Club of Norfolk, Virginians for High Speed Rail, Greater Norfolk Corporation, and former Chairman of the Norfolk Design Review Committee. Mr. Shriver designed the College of Architecture buildings Cowgill Hall and Burchard Hall at Virginia Tech, The Norfolk Airport "Airport in a Garden." His ability to bring people together in teams to achieve a higher goal was illustrated by the successful design of the Lief Erikson International Airport to complement the U.S. Navy, NATO, and The Republic of Iceland. Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Lois Brackett Shriver; his sons, Kendrick Vannier Shriver and Matthew Wellman Shriver and three grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Shriver, Paul Vannier Shriver and Allison Rawlings Shriver. A funeral will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, at noon in Park Place United Methodist Church by the Rev. Stephen Wall-Smith. A pre-service viewing will start at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Park Place United Methodist Church, 500 W. 34th Street, Norfolk, in lieu of sending flowers. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk chapel is handling arrangements.
