Lula Mae May

Norfolk - Lula Mae May, 81, of Norfolk, Virginia, peacefully passed from this life into an eternal life in Heaven on Thursday, July 05, 2018 at Sentara General Hospital. She was surrounded with prayers and love by her three beloved children. Lula was born in Americus Georgia on December 28, 1936 to the late Jack and Johnnie Mae Cooke. She received her education in public schools of Sumter County and A.S. Staley High School. While in high school, she met the love of her life, Charlie T. May Sr., and in 1957, they joined together in holy matrimony. While her husband served in the Navy, they moved to various locations, but decided to make Norfolk, Virginia their home. They were married for 46 years until Charlie T. May, Sr. transitioned to Heaven. Their union brought forth three beautiful children, Charles Jr., Timothy, Christal. Lula was also a devoted member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church for many years where she remained faithfully as a servant of Christ. She loved to help and serve others, and made a career joyfully working at Norfolk General Hospital as a Nurse Care Partner (Practitioner) and retired after 30 years of service. Lula was a dedicated woman to her family and friends. She loved to host family gatherings and kept an open, welcoming door to all of her loved ones. As the Matriarch of the family, her home served as the "Headquarters" for family/friends and everyone knew a visit to Norfolk would not be complete without a stopover to her home first! Lula is survived by her three children- Charles Jr. (Tamara), Timothy (Romonsa), and Christal, grandchildren- Verdonda May Walker, Adrena May, Ariel McDaniel, Joshua May, Michael Holliman Jr., Ashlee May and Timothy May Jr; one great grandson, Gavin Walker; sisters- Carrie (Charles Randell), Shirlene (Franky Lane), Barbara (Glenn Otis), sisters in law- Marva Cooke, Florence Cooke, and Wilma Cooke; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was also blessed to have a large contingent of family on the May, Cottle, Jackson, and Motley side who held a special place for her in their hearts. Lula is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cooke, two sisters- Annie Maude Cooke and Josie Mae Simpson; five brothers- Samuel, Alonza, Eddie, Charles and Oscar Cooke. She will be truly missed. A funeral service will be held 11am, Saturday July 14, 2018 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, 1141 Campostella Road, Norfolk, VA. Services entrusted to Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Chapel.
