Miriam M. Stribling Obituary
Miriam M. Stribling

Norfolk - Miriam McLaughlin Stribling, 81, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 in her home at Harbor's Edge with her loving husband of fifty-nine years holding her. Born in Florence, SC, she was the daughter of the late IJL and Lenora Love McLaughlin. She was also predeceased by her sister Harriette Lees and brother IJL "Buddy" McLaughlin Jr. of Florence SC and great-grandson Oscar of Richmond VA.

Miriam, a child of school teachers, earned a reputation for hard work and studiousness at a young age. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class and Magna Cum Laude from Winthrop College in Rock Hill SC. She was a recipient of a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship in 1959 and earned her Master's Degree in French and English from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. That year she married the Rev. Jess H. Stribling Jr. and began a 30-year career teaching high school French. Although she was generally quiet and reserved, when she entered a classroom of teenagers she became transformed, vibrant with enthusiasm, encouragement, and care for each student.

Miriam cherished her family, as they are now left to cherish her memory: her beloved husband, Jess, and daughter, Lenore Love S. Whitehurst (also a high school French teacher of thirty years) (Danny) of Chesapeake; her granddaughter Courtney Bise (Cory) and grandson Brian Whitehurst (Maria) and three great-grandchildren (Henry, Eleanor, and Bear), all of Richmond VA, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family will receive friends at a visitation today (Sunday) afternoon from 5 until 6:00 p.m. at the Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday morning, August 13th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Chesapeake with the Rev. Lottie Cochran officiating. A reception will follow in the church social hall. Entombment will be private at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 233 Mann Drive, Chesapeake, Virginia 23322. Online condolences may be sent to www.hdoliver.com.
