Thomas D. Elder, Jr.

Norfolk - Thomas David Elder, Jr., (Tom), 57, died suddenly June 7, 2018, at his home. He was born in Washington, D.C., February 2, 1961. He was the son of Dr. Thomas David Elder and Johanna Paul Elder. He is survived by his sisters Peyton Elder Manley (Tommy), nieces Kaitlin and Caroline Manley; Martha Elder Wallace (John), nieces Meredith and Jessie Wallace; Katie Elder Bagay (Martin), nieces Anne and Johanna, nephew, John Bouldin Bagay.

He was a 1979 graduate of Norfolk Academy, earned a B.A. degree in English from Washington and Lee University, Class of 1983. He had over 30 years of experience in commercial real estate. Most recently he served as Director of Economic Development for Isle of Wight County. He was Executive Vice President of Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance. He served as Assistant Director of the Chesapeake Economic Development Department from 2006-2015.

He loved playing tennis at Norfolk Yacht and various tournaments in town; he was an avid fan of soccer and football. He most enjoyed spending time with his First Thursdays Group; with the members of The Tidewater Boat Club and Spec fishing; he also enjoyed meals and the camaraderie of the staff of Aw Shucks and lunches at Wharf Hill in Smithfield.

He will be remembered for his quick wit and story-telling, charm and infectious personality, brilliant smile, blue eyes, and most of all, for his love of his friends and family.

A private burial will take place Saturday morning. Please join the family at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, for a Celebration of Life reception, beginning at noon.
