Warren B. Murphy

Virginia Beach -

Warren Burton Murphy, award-winning author of more than two hundred books, entered into eternal rest in his home on the morning of September 4th. He was 81 years old.

Born in Jersey City, NJ, he worked in politics until creating the Destroyer series of books with Richard Sapir in 1964. Winner of a dozen national awards, including two Edgar awards and two Shamus awards, Murphy's writing spanned many genres, from action-adventure to political thrillers to screenplays (The Eiger Sanction, Lethal Weapon 2), and was a significant influence on many young writers.

He is survived by his five children-Deirdre Abbotts of Westport CT, Megan Murphy of Virginia Beach VA, Brian Murphy of Virginia Beach VA, Ardath Hering of Secaucus NJ, and Devin Murphy of Virginia Beach VA-as well as his six grandchildren: Adam, Samantha, Morgan, Adelaide, Thomas, and Tyler.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel on Virginia Beach Boulevard Saturday, September 12th from 12 P.M. to 2 P.M. and 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Condolences may be offered to the family at:

Dear Molly,
Just today I was wondering where you, and Warren might be living. I am back in Teaneck, NJ and remember vividly waking up in the wee hours of the morning and listening to Warren's typewriter. My husband, Frederick, passed away four years ago from ALS. Our daughters, Lara and Ana live in Brooklyn now.
I felt very sad when I read that Warren has also passed away. We had so much fun having you both as our next-door neighbors sometime in 1982?

While I only spoke with him briefly, his impact was huge and the loss of him is felt deeply.
Warren was a genius in his own right and always stood for his beliefs while giving everyone a laugh.
He will be missed greatly.
RIP, or keep the MAN busy.

I was sorry to hear of this, even sorrier that I didn't get to meet him in person, only through brief correspondences. He was kind, funny, and had a lot of good advice. Most people aren't anywhere as productive as he was even in his last years, his works will outlast us all.
