William Henry "Bill" Pierce Obituary
On January 11, 2019, William Henry “Bill” Pierce, 84, accepted the invitation home from his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born in Ashland, OR on August 24, 1934, Bill considered Reno, NV his hometown. After graduating from Reno High School, Bill served in the United States Marine Corps and retired from the Air Force with twenty-six years of service. Rounding out his professional career, Bill worked as an Army civil service management analyst at the Training and Doctrine Command. Throughout his life, Bill upheld the Air Force values of Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence In All We Do. He was proud to serve in the Armed Forces because of a profound sense of patriotism and love for America.Bill held a Bachelor’s in European History from Troy State University. He then earned a Master’s in Public Administration from Auburn. After retirement, Bill became a public servant for his state and local community: a member of the Virginia State Board of Mental Health and the Hampton Roads Sanitation District; elected to Chesapeake City Council; volunteer at Chesapeake Regional Hospital.Bill married Doris Ann Widmer (née Harrison) on December 30, 1985; they were blessed with “True Love” and recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. Surviving Bill are Doris, his three children (from prior marriage), Annette Jordan of Omaha, NE, Stephen Pierce of Denver, CO and Monica Pierce of Chesapeake, VA; step-son Eric Widmer of Gates, NC. He is also survived by Doris’ siblings â€" and their families - who embraced him as their own brother: Graham “Bobby” Harrison, Sr., Earl Harrison, Clabon Harrison, Frances Trueblood and Rose “Polly” Odom. Bill is preceded in death by his father, Sonny; sister Pat; step-daughter Wanda Kay Widmer and grandson Christian Lee Jordan.Bill’s family and friends will gather for a private service to reflect on his legacy; Pastor Mark Hambrick and Pastor Donald Jones will lead the service and dedicate Bill to Christ. Interment will follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens with an Air Force Honor Guard bestowing full military honors for his service to the United States of America. The Pierce family offers heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at CSL Georgian Manor for welcoming Bill and Doris into the community and providing exceptional, loving care in their sunset years. We are also indebted to the hospice staff of Westminster Canterbury who tended to Bill with grace and kindness in his final days.
