William L. Brittingham Obituary
William Brittingham
Norfolk - William L. Brittingham, lifelong Norfolk resident, died March 18, 2013. Bill was a man who never yearned for riches, found pure joy in the simplest of things and was happiest with his wife Virginia by his side. They met at Park Place United Methodist Church which was the center of their family life. He was father to Mary Anne, Bruce, and Sarah, and grandfather to Byron and Mary Elizabeth.
His Norfolk Public Schools teaching career began in 1946. He taught chemistry and biology at Maury High School for more than 30 years. As tennis coach during that time, he was proud to have had two state championship teams. Most afternoons he could be found playing tennis at Fergus Reid. Many happy summers were spent teaching tennis at Camp Kabeyun in New Hampshire. Bill was a self-taught artist and when it was too rainy to play tennis, he enjoyed drawing and painting. An avid reader and lifelong learner, he studied science, religion, history, and art. Everything in the natural world interested him, and as a man of science and great faith in God he never saw a conflict between the two. A beautiful sunset on the Lafayette River seen while crossing the Granby Street bridge in Norfolk, brought him as much joy as the view from the top of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire.
His family will remember him this way, and is comforted knowing that he is now with his true love Virginia.
The family is grateful for the kind caregivers at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the support of Hospice and Palliative Care of Tidewater.
A private family burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Park Place United Methodist Church or to the Maury Foundation, P.O. Box 6224, Norfolk, VA 23508. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel is assisting the family. Online condolences may be offered to the family through www.hdoliver.com.
