Richard D. Harcum KILL DEVIL HILLS - Richard Darrell Harcum died Nov. 2, 2008, after a long battle with mesothelioma. Richard was born in Portsmouth and grew up in the Portsmouth/Suffolk area. He served his country in the Virginia Army National Guard. He moved to the Outer Banks in 1970, a placed he truly loved. He worked for Charter Communications for 31 years on the Outer Banks, was a past member of the Nags Head Fire Department and was a member of "The Rising Tides" Surf Fishing Team of Nags Head. He loved his animals and people loved him. Richard is survived by his wife, Connie Maxwell of the residence; two sisters, Shirley Baker of Lindale, Texas, and Phyllis Bilskis of Chesapeake; four brothers, O.D. Harcum Jr. of China Grove, N.C., Jerry Harcum, David Rodger Harcum, both of Chesapeake, and Raymond Harcum of China Grove. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Dare Home Health & Hospice or Dare County SPCA, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
