Hobart L. Scott, Jr.

Hobart L. Scott, Jr., 86, went to be with the Lord March 13, 2014. Born in Fincastle, VA, he was the only child of the late Willie Housman and Hobart L. Scott.

He graduated from William Fleming High School in Roanoke, VA in 1945 and served in the Army Signal Corps during the occupation of South Korea. He graduated from the University of VA in 1950 with an Electrical Engineering degree and worked for a short while for Westinghouse before joining the Norfolk and Western Railway as a Special Apprentice rising through the ranks to master Mechanic before transferring to the Operating Department where he worked as Asst. Supt. Norfolk Terminal (Coal Pier) and then as Supt., consectively, Roanoke Terminal, Norfolk Divn., New River Divn., Pocahontas Divn., and Sciota Divn. before becoming Manager Transportation, and then Asst. Genl. Manager of the A&P Regions. He then left N&W in 1967 to join Johnson and Carper Furniture Co. as Asst. Chief Engr. rising to Vice Pres. Operations and Genl. Services before being acquired by Singer; after which he was appointed Vice Pres. Manufacturing Furniture Divn. of the Singer Co. In 1971 he returned to N&W as Asst. Genl. Mgr., Lake Region and then in 1973 he was appointed Genl. Mgr. Motive Power and Equipment and in 1980 Vice Pres. Operations. After the merger with the Southern Railway into Norfolk Southern Corp. he came to the new Norfolk Headquarters as Vice Pres. & Chief Mechanical Officer and retired as Sr. Vice Pres. & CMO in 1987.

He was an Eagle Scout, a Registered Professional Engineer with the Commonwealth of VA, a member of the Raven Society and Tau Beta Pi of UVA, and attended advanced management programs at Columbia, Harvard and UVA. He was a past member of Green Memorial, Huntington Court, and Raleigh Court Methodist Churches and Windsor Hills and First Baptist Churches in Roanoke and First Baptist Church of Norfolk and a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church in Virginia Beach.

He was pre-deceased by an infant son, Mark Hobart Scott. Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years, Evelyn Seay Scott of Roanoke and now of Virginia Beach; his son, David L. Scott and wife, Mary Anne Overstreet Scott of Kennesaw, GA; his daughter, Amy Kay Scott of Virginia Beach; his grandson, Aaron L. Scott and wife, Jennifer Clay Scott of Cumming, GA; his grandson, Corey L. Scott and wife, Carlene Moran Scott of Woodbridge, VA and four great grandchildren, Audrey and Hayden Scott of Woodbridge, VA, Kate and Justin Scott of Cumming, GA.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 1264 N. Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach on Sunday, March 16, 2014 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2014 at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, Virginia Beach by the Rev. Prentis McGoldrick with a private internment service conducted at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, VA.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to Thalia Lynn Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. Condolences may be offered to the family at:
