Shelley Posey

Newport News - Shelley Morel Posey, 52, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Riverside Hospital in Newport News VA. She was born on January 14, 1962 in Midland, Texas. Shelley graduated from Mt. Carmel Academy in New Orleans and further went on to graduate from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education. Upon graduation she began her teaching career at St. Francis Xavier School in Metairie, Louisiana. She was selected as the Outstanding Young Educator for the state of Louisiana for 1992.

She was a devoted Coast Guard wife who spent the last 21 years moving around the country sharing her infectious smile with all of those who crossed her path. She was a dedicated mother who enjoyed nothing more than watching her boys participate in their many activities. Whether running cross country and track, wrestling, swimming, baseball or Scouting, they could count on their mother to be there, sometimes to watch the kids, other times to enjoy the social aspect of the event with her many friends. She enjoyed geocaching with the boys and her friends. Her volunteer activities ranged from teaching Sunday school, feeding the homeless, building playsets for pediatric cancer patients, to handing out Christmas presents to needy families.

Shelley will be greatly missed by her family and friends, all who loved her: her beloved husband of 21 years, Ward Bowen Posey; and children, Austin Ward Posey and Alex Bowen Posey. She is survived by her stepfather and mother, René and Charmaine Thionville; Stepmother, Marge Morel; sister Lisa Morel Las; brothers Mark Morel (Carla) and David Morel (Nina); stepsisters Megan Kindilien, Suzanne Wallace (Mike) and stepbrother Christopher Spencer (Karen). In addition, she is survived by her uncle Louis J. Roussel, III (Sally), aunt Mae E. Mayer; many loving nieces and nephews; Mark, Jr., Michelle, Mary, Chandler, Conner, Lauren, Ansley, Levy, Rachel, Logan, and Grant. She is also survived by her God Parents, Noel Banowetz and Sal Mannino. She was pre-deceased by her father, Ambrose (Buddy) Morel, her aunt Rita N. Kennedy, an infant sister, Anne Mary Morel, and a stillborn sister.

Shelley is an organ donor and has happily shared with those in need. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 29, from 7 to 8 p.m. at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Rd, Newport News, Virginia. A Celebration Mass of Shelley's life will be held at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, March 30, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 100 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, Virginia 23601. She will be laid to rest in her beloved New Orleans with her Grandmother, Lucy "Nana" Cocchiarra Roussel, at a funeral service to be held next week. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Peninsula Catholic High School, 600 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, Virginia 23601 or to a scholarship fund that has been established in her name, The S. M. Posey Scholarship Fund, Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School, 215 Betz Place, Metaire, LA 70005.
