W. Ray Blackman, Sr.

Chesapeake - William Ray Blackman, Sr., 68, went to be with the Lord on July 15, 2014 at Duke University Medical Center. A native of Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Samuel W. and Beatrice Raynor Blackman. He was the owner of Ray Blackman Enterprises, Inc. and the former president of the Peck Equipment Company. He was a member and deacon of Temple Baptist Church in Chesapeake where he formerly served as deacon chairman, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, Children's Church director and choir director. He also served for many years as a member of the Board of Directors of Union Mission Ministries.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Brenda Bell Blackman; a daughter, Tammy Owens and her husband, Glenn; a son, W. Ray Blackman, Jr. and his wife, Christina; three grandchildren, J. Haden Deibler, Rachel Blackman and Kristen Blackman; and a sister-in-law, Iris Blackman. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Glen Blackman.

The family will receive friends at Temple Baptist Church on Sunday, July 20, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the church with Dr. James P. Rushing and Pastor Jerry L. Greco officiating. A private family burial will take place in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Temple Baptist Church Mission Fund or the Union Mission Ministries.
