Dr. Stephen D. Bement

Virginia Beach - Steve was called home on February 5th at 5:32 p.m. after suffering a massive heart attack at the age of 58.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia to parents Carolyn & Gerald Bement on Oct. 31, 1959.

He leaves behind his wife, Denise; daughter, Ashley (Michael) Hall, son, Stephen Jr. and daughter, Shelbie (Taylor). His greatest role was that of "Chief", a name he gave himself after the birth of his first granddaughter Hylah. He also had the pleasure of meeting his second granddaughter, Teagan, just two days before he left us. Sister, Sharon (Bill) Hadcox, whom he loved dearly, niece Crystal & nephew Bill Pope, more of a brother than a nephew, two great nephews & one great niece. Brother, Fred Shipman & family in AZ, and many cousins in St. Louis. He was particularly close to Scott Bement & his family.

He also leaves behind the most amazing extended family on his wife's side fondly known as the LaMernerMents! Ken, Mary, Heather, Kevin, Finn, Sarah, Jason, Aidan, Jacque, Drew, Nathan and in-laws Gerry and Dolly. So many, friends it is impossible to list them all.

He joined the Norfolk Fire Department in 1979. His most current title was Chief Fire Inspector for Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fire & Emergency Services Oceana. The fire department is a unique brotherhood. We are humbled and thankful beyond words for your overwhelming outpouring of love and support.

He was also an ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene, where he studied & received his Doctorate in Theology. He pastored for several years and also worked with Evangelist Jerry McGee ministering & doing missionary work in Africa.

We will honor his life Saturday, February 10th at 3 p.m. Little Creek Base Chapel. Please text 757-309-6830 if you are attending. We need to provide list of names for gate entry. Please enter through gate 5.

It takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but it takes a lifetime to forget them. We will love and honor you all the days of our lives.

Denise, Steven, Ashley and Shelby, you are in my thoughts and prayers. He was a great guy as a friend and a Fire Prevention Chief and will be missed greatly. I am glad I was able to have worked beside and for him.

We shared many fond memories "back in the day". Though we did not see each other often recently you and your family always hold a special place in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.
