Melvin R. Whitehurst CHESAPEAKE - Melvin Roy Whitehurst, 82, of the 1100 block of Gauntlet Drive, passed away Sept. 5, 2008. He was born Dec. 22, 1925, to the late Clarence and Lola Whitehurst in Elizabeth City, N.C. Melvin was an active member of New Central Baptist Church, where he served as an usher until his health began to fail. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. Melvin was a barber in Berkley and worked as a machinist at Metro Imperial at Colonnas Shipyard. Often known as "Roy," he was predeceased by two sons, Antrell Cartwright and Melvin Whitehurst Jr. and his grandparents, Louis and Carrie Perry. He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters, Deborah Whitehurst, Carolyn Whitehurst and Brenda Whitehurst; four sons, Glenn Whitehurst, George Whitehurst, Kelvin Whitehurst and Marvin Gaye; three sisters, Mildred Harper, Evelyn Palmer and Ruth Holly; one brother, Leon Whitehurst; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at noon Thursday in New Central Baptist Church, 714 Walker Ave. The Rev. Donald Gaffney will officiate. Interment will be in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Family and friends will assemble at 1101 E. Indian River Road one hour prior to the service for the procession to the church.
