Stanley Adelson Obituary

Stanley Lewis Adelson NEWPORT NEWS - Stanley Lewis Adelson passed away Jan. 13, 2009. He suffered with Hodgkin's lymphoma for almost 11 years which he fought strong and hard for the entire time. Born May 23, 1952, to Bernice Adelson and the late Sam Adelson in Jersey City, N.J., his family relocated to Newport News in 1957. Upon graduating from Ferguson High School, Stan worked for Liebherr America, 7-11, Midas Muffler and the U.S. Navy as a civil service mechanic. He retired after 19 years with the Navy on disability in 2004. Stan was a member of N-Gauge Historical Society (Lee Hall Station), International Plastic Modelers Society (Tidewater Chapter) and National Hot Rod Association. He was a lifelong fan of NASCAR, NHRA and military aircraft. His favorite race tracks included Martinsville, Southside, Langley and Dinwiddie. In 1992, he married Wanda Moser, who survives him. In addition, his brother, Corey Adelson with wife Susan Nachman and their son Michael Nachman-Adelson of Newport News will always cherish his memory. Other surviving family members are Carolyn (sister-in-law) and Ernie Tarrant of Williamsburg; nephew, Brian Tarrant with wife Kristin and their son Dylan of Toano; brother-in-law, Wesley and Linda Patterson of Friendswood, Texas. The graveside service led by Corey Adelson will be held in Parklawn Memorial Park, on Armistead Avenue in Hampton, Va., at 10 a.m. today. Stan was an unpretentious type of guy and hated wearing suits. In his memory, casual dress (t-shirts and jeans are OK) is encouraged. No flowers please. In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable donation to your local SPCA, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1606 Aberdeen Road, Hampton, VA 23666-3117, WHRO Public Broadcasting, 5200 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23508 or a charity of your choice in Stan's memory. Visitation with the family will be held at Stan and Wanda's home following the service. Stan signed every email with his three most personal and philosophical mottos: "In life's journey, it is not about going to the grave in a well preserved body, but sliding in sideways in a totally worn out body saying wow, what a ride." "Aviation is proof, that given the will, we have the capacity to achieve the impossible."- Capt. Edward Rickenbacker. "What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others." - Pericles. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda, You know you are in my thoughts and prayers during this time. Stanley has been part of my life since Sep 1975 and then I was able to put you two together in mid 80's. Know you were the "light of his life". He is at peace now and without pain and suffering. You were a blessing to him during his illness. All my love.

May God bless you Wanda and your family at a time like this. Stan was a very good and close friend whom I talked and joked and shared his love and fascination with race cars & military aircraft. We would spend many times on break at the end of the runway and talk. The only solace in his passing is there well be no more suffering now that he is safe in the arms of Jesus. Be at peace my friend. Amen

Corey and the Adelson family,
I was very sorry to read today of Stanley's passing. I've known Stanley since I was 10 years old. I grew up on Wallace Circle in Hidenwood and Stanley lived on Fairway Lane. I knew of him primarily thru a mutual friend, Rob Simon. Stanley was my friend thru grade school, high school and later at Liebherr America from 1977-80. Sadly, I lost track of Stanley after I left Liebherr, but have never forgotten his friendship and sense of humor. He will be missed. God bless.

I am so sorry to hear about Stanley passing. I knew him from high school and he lived down the street from my first husband when they were growing up. Stanley was always the kindest person. He was very quiet but hilarious when he opened up!! It has been years since I last saw him but I am sure he was the same gentle, kind, caring and unique man he was in high school. I know he will be greatly missed. Know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
