Barney Aloysius Gill Jr.
Virginia Beach - Lt. Col Bernard "Barney" A. Gill Jr., Ret., 84, died April 17, 2012. Barney was born in Norfolk to the late Bernard and Agnes Lester Gill. He graduated from Granby High School, where he was a star athlete, having scored the 1st touchdown in the Oyster Bowl history, was a member of the Granby High School Athletic Hall of Fame and was selected as a running back for the 1932-1982 50th Anniversary All Time All-Tidewater Football Team. Barney was a member of the West Point football coaching staff for the only undefeated Army team in 1958. He was a veteran having served two tours with the 82nd Airborne Rangers in Vietnam. He retired from the Army in 1970. Barney was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, had played football and basketball for UVA, served as the VP of operations for the Norfolk Neptune's Professional Football Team, and later retired from the Veteran's Administration. Barney had a passion for UVA Athletics, but above all was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, who will be dearly missed.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 42 years, Nancy L. Gill, children, Cathy Smith of Virginia Beach, Nancy Smith Bunin (Peter) of Richmond, Va., Eddie Smith of Stanardsville, Va., Jimmy Smith (Amy) of Coral Springs, Fla. and Barney Gill III of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Brandon Gill Smith, Justin Anthony Smith, and Taylor Ashley Smith; and a sister, Margie Breitmoser of Jacksonville, Fla.
A celebration of Barney's life will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1801 Baltic Ave, Virginia Beach, VA with Bruce Rader officiating. A reception will follow at The Princess Anne Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to www.dav.org, www.woundedwarriors.org or www.virginiaathleticsfoundations.com.
