Virginia Beach - Joan Ellen Rivera Robbins died May 17, 2012 at Sentara - Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach, Va. She passed quietly with her children and grandchildren at her side. Joan was a resident of the Atlantic Shores retirement community in Virginia Beach but lived most of her married life in Fredericksburg, Va. She was born on January 5, 1929, the youngest of six children. Her parents were Edelmira Requena Hernandez and Justo Pastor Rivera. The family lived in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Joan attended college in the United States and received her bachelor of Science degree from Radford College in 1953. She worked as a seed analyst for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and met her future husband at a medical school fraternity party in Richmond Virginia in April 1954. They hit it off. They were married on August 28, 1954 at All Saints Episcopal Church, Richmond, Va. Her husband was Clement Jay Robbins III, a physician who predeceased her on April 14, 2008. He worshiped the ground on which she walked and she felt his death very keenly. She was active in social and civic affairs in Fredericksburg, Va. These activities included the Junior Women's Club, the Parnassus Club, the Mary Washington Hospital Auxiliary, and Hospice. She was also a ferociously competitive and successful bridge and poker player who was never afraid to go "all in". In the days before the Discovery Channel, she worked with the American Association of University Women to bring travelogues to the Fredericksburg area. She is survived by one brother, Jaime Rivera. She is survived by her two sons, Clement Jay Robbins IV and Bruce Bainbridge Robbins. She is also survived by her six grandchildren. The children of Clement Jay Robbins IV are Megan Cates Robbins, Emma Elizabeth Robbins and Clement Jay Robbins V. The children of Bruce Bainbridge Robbins are Catherine Jean Robbins, Rachel Hope Robbins, and Renee Grace Robbins. On Saturday, June 9 at 4 p.m., there will be a memorial service followed by a reception at the Club House of Atlantic Shores Retirement Community 1200 Atlantic Shores Drive Virginia Beach, VA 23454. On Saturday, June 16 at 3 p.m. there will be a funeral service at Saint George's Episcopal Church, 905 Princess Ann Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends at St. George's Episcopal Church after interment. All of her many friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made to the Atlantic Shores Employees' Gift Fund 1200 Atlantic Shores Drive Virginia Beach 23454. She was fond of those who cared for her and her husband at Atlantic Shores.
