Louis J. Ulanich
Chesapeake - Louis John Ulanich, 93, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2013 in Norfolk. He was born on September 27, 1919 to Mary and Louis Ulanich. He grew up in the coal mining town of Westland, PA and graduated from Hickory High School.
Louis served with honor in the United States Army as Staff Sergeant beginning in 1940 where his service included India and United States. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and worked at the Naval Supply Center, Norfolk, as a Storage Manager until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and American Legion. Louis was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was an extremely gifted gardener and for many years shared his harvest of homegrown vegetables with family, friends and neighbors. He also delivered his produce to Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia.
Mr. Ulanich is survived by his loving wife, Frances; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Trisha Ulanich; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Steve Radcliffe; granddaughters, Megan Overbey and husband Rick; and Laura Nifong and husband Mike; two great-grandchildren, Erin and Zachary Nifong. He is also survived by a sister, Irene Shackelford and two brothers, Johnny Ulanich and Paul Ulanich.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on March 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends and visitors at 10:30 a.m. prior to the Mass. Burial will be private at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran's Cemetery, Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratefulness to the wonderful, compassionate and caring staff of Leigh Hall Assisted Living. Their dedication to our father and grandfather was evident at all times and will be greatly remembered.
