Russell D. Andrews
Smithfield - Russell Davis Andrews passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013, after a prolonged illness. He was born on December 21, 1922 on the family farm in Zuni, VA, to Margaret Camp Davis and William Chapman Andrews. He graduated with the Windsor High School class of 1940. After studying at Virginia Tech, he enlisted in 1943 and served in the Army Air Corps until 1946. After military service, he returned to Tech and graduated in 1949 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He worked summers during college at the Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach. He began a commercial sales career with the Pure Oil Company (later to become Union Oil, then Unocal), with several transfers during his tenure. It was while living in Charlotte that he met and wed Phyllis Shellem Bolick, his wife of 54 years.
Returning to his Isle of Wight roots after retirement in 1986, he moved to Smithfield in 1988. He was preceded in death by brothers William C. Andrews, Jr., and Leo Andrews. He is survived by his wife Phyllis; son Russell Davis Andrews, Jr., daughter-in-law Paula and granddaughters Alyssa and Charity, all of Kent, OH; daughter Alison Andrews Carney and son-in-law Michael of Fairfax, VA; nephews Leo Andrews, Jr., Warren Andrews and William Andrews III; niece Courtney Andrews, one great niece and three great nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 27 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Smithfield. The family will receive friends there afterwards.
