Charles S. Gifford Jr. Obituary
Charles S. Gifford, Jr.

Norfolk - Charles Stanley Gifford, Jr., beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, April 15, 2015.

Born in Los Angeles County, September 21, 1922, Chuck graduated from Hollywood High School, 90210. As a dapper youth he took advantage of his father's career in the movies to sneak onto the set of "Gone with the Wind" among others and made many friends within the business. He went on to serve courageously in the Navy during WWII and landed with the LST-281 on Utah Beach on D-Day during H-Hour. While stationed in England he met Joan, the love of his life, to whom he was happily married for 65 years.

After the War, they returned to the U.S. and settled in Norfolk where they raised their three children. A successful sales manager with Colonial Oil/Pure Oil/Union 76, he retired and became active in real estate development and with his wife, Joan, traveled extensively, circling the globe three times. He was a deacon and Treasurer of the Bayview United Church of Christ and a proud member of the Freemasons, like his father and several generations before him. Long after his honorable discharge, he continued to serve his country as a member of the Board of Directors of the Navy League and served his community with distinction on the Civic Facilities Commission of Norfolk.

Whenever he could, he enjoyed spending time on his boat, in his garden or in the Cayman Islands and as an avid amateur genealogist he was able to trace his family back to the Mayflower. As a widower, he was blessed to meet the second love of his life, Betty Chiappa, to whom he was lovingly devoted until his passing. His phenomenal storytelling and quick wit will be missed by his family and friends. His love and reassuring support will be missed most of all. Chuck was predeceased by his parents, C. Stanley and Lillian P. Gifford; his sister, Doris E. Gifford; his loving wife, Joan; and his beloved daughter, Diann Jordan.

He was survived by his children, Tim Gifford and Francine Deir and their spouses Diana Gifford and Ed Deir; his god-daughter, Beverly Efrid and son-in-law, Kenny Jordan and wife Mary; his grandchildren, Lisa Snyder, Todd Gifford, Bryan W. Harrison, Matthew Gifford, Daniel Deir, Jarrod Deir, Scott Daschiell, Kim Besley, Ed Britt and their respective spouses or significant others, Marina, Elena, Johanna, Beth, Susan, Michelle, Bruce and Shannon; his great-grandchildren, Kristin, Zachary, Noah, Domino, Mace, Nadia, Dylann, Brandon, Cameron, Aiden, Sierra, Brice, Lauren, Kayla, Logan and Harleigh and his great-great grandchildren, Tristan and Stanton.

The family will receive friends at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Friday, April 17, 2015, between 6:30 - 8 p.m. The service will be held at Bayview United Church of Christ Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 1 p.m. followed by the burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery. A reception will immediately follow at the Church. The family asks that donations be sent in lieu of flowers to Lee's Friends. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
