PEORIA HEIGHTS - Donald Hasenstein, 90, of Peoria Heights, IL, passed away Monday, February 5, 2018, at Heartland Manor in Peoria, IL.
Born November 27, 1927, in Sheboygan, WI, Don was the youngest of three sons born to William Hasenstein and Laura Mueller of Sheboygan.
Don is survived by the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Irene (deGeus), also from Sheboygan; as well as his family.
Irene and Don were married on June 25, 1949, and raised four children, Nancy (Dean), Tom, Mark (Patty), Kurt (Lynn), and are survived by them and grandchildren, Bill (Abby), Todd, Joe, Haley (Alex), Jake and Jenna; and great-granddaughter, Cadence.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Willard (Lilian) of Sheboygan and Ray (Shirley) Hasenstein of Sheboygan.
Don was a World War II era Army veteran.
Don was a skilled athlete who participated in basketball, football and track and field while attending North High School in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He won first place in shot put in the State of Wisconsin in 1946, and later was in the first class of Athletic Hall of Fame inductees for North High School.
Don graduated from Bradley University. He was in the Basketball Officials Hall of Fame and a participant of the Drake Relays.
His first job in education was in Henry, IL, and two years later in Chillicothe, IL, transitioning shortly after to Hines Grade School District 150 in Peoria, and later retiring as Principal from Glen Oak Grade School for District 150.
Cremation has been accorded and a memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 11, 2018, at Richwoods Church in Peoria at 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude in his name.
