Lewis Lightbody Obituary

PEKIN - Lewis Rudolphus Lightbody, 88, of Pekin passed away at 3:32 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2013, at his home.

Born Oct. 26, 1924, in Peoria to Lewis R. and Helen Marie (Kent) Lightbody, he married Mary Hastings on Feb. 27, 1948. She died Aug. 13, 1976. He later married Carrie Lee (Mitchell) Gibson on March 19, 1977, in Pekin.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie; four daughters, Kay (Jim) Tooley, Joni Test and Kimberly (Mark) Craig, all of Pekin, and Linda (Doug) Lopez of South Pekin; four sons, Lewis "Buster" (Nelda) Lightbody of South Pekin, Frank (Carol) Gibson Jr. of Missouri, and Harold (Juanita) Gibson and Mike Gibson, both of Pekin; 27 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; one son, Steven Lightbody; two infant daughters; four sisters, Vivian Streitmatter, Bernelta Peterson, Doris Vincent and Helen Antonacci; and five brothers, Clyde, Otis, Cecil, Richard and Jack.

A United States Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he served from April 21, 1943, to April 25, 1946. He attained the rank of private first class.

Lewis worked at Keystone Steel and Wire Company in Bartonville for 33 years, retiring in 1979 as a galvanizer in the wire mill. He taught at Bethel Baptist Academy in Pekin from 1979 to 1983. He also had worked at Bob's Standard Station in Peoria.

He was a devoted member of Second Baptist Church in Peoria, where he was a longtime deacon and financial secretary, Sunday school teacher and church bus driver. He volunteered at Pekin Township and South Side Mission.

Lewis was a Christian man who enjoyed volunteering and cherished his family. He was known for saying, "It's only a lie if you believe it."

His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Jim Vincent will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, where military rites will be accorded.
