MORTON - Former State Sen. Claude U. "Bud" Stone Jr., 88, of Morton passed away at 10:50 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Hawthorne Inn in Galesburg.

He was born April 30, 1926, in Peoria to Claude U. and Alma Marie (Poppen) Stone. He married Mary L. Thomas on March 14, 1953, in Roanoke, Ill. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2007.

He also was preceded in death by one sister, Sheila Day of Peoria in 2000.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra E. (James) Ludwig of Havana, Ill., and Karen M. (Michael) McEntire of Tucson, Ariz.; one son, Thomas L. Stone of Redondo Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his stepsister, Joann Feucht of Peoria.

Bud attended White Grade School and Peoria High School and received his bachelor's degrees from Cornell University and Bradley University and his master's degree in business administration from Stanford University. He worked for Caterpillar Inc. for 33 years, holding management positions in pricing, advertising, sales development and marketing, all within the Engine Division. He retired in 1985.

Bud was an Illinois state senator, representing the 45th Senate District for the 92nd Legislative Session.

Bud enjoyed keeping active and throughout the years kept busy by being actively involved in many organizations and committees. He had been a Republican precinct committeeman since 1956 in Peoria and Tazewell counties. He was active in the state of Illinois Young Republican Organization and the Republican Party and also served as assistant secretary of the Peoria County Republican Organization, vice president of the city of Peoria Republican Organization and as chairman of the Tazewell County Republican Central Committee. In 1996, he shared the award of Tazewell County GOP Man of the Year. He was a member of the Morton Planning Commission for 30 years and was a founding member of the Land Use Advisory Committee for the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission for 26 years. Prior to his service to Morton, he served on the city of Peoria Planning and Zoning Commission. His greatest length of tenure was being a member of the Illinois State Archeological Society for over 62 years.

Bud was an active member of the Morton United Methodist Church, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, with the Rev. Gary Motta officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be at Roberts Cemetery in Morton.
