David A. Drewery Obituary
David A. Drewery, age 91, passed away on April 21, 2013. He was born on August 19, 1921, in Buffalo, NY. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, with a B.S. in Management Engineering in 1942. He served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Transportation Corps in World War II in the Pacific. After the war, he served as a senior industrial engineer at U.S. Steel outside of Pittsburgh. In 1951 he joined Harnischfeger Corporation in Milwaukee, WI, a manufacturer of heavy industrial equipment. He held a succession of plant-level and corporate management roles over 17 years, eventually as Director of Manufacturing and Engineering Services and then General Manager of Materials with responsibility for all salaried and professional employees. In 1968 he joined Cincinnati Incorporated, in Cincinnati, OH, as Vice President of Manufacturing. He left in 1972 to join White Motor in St. Charles, IL. In 1974 he joined Solar Turbines in San Diego, CA, as Vice President of Manufacturing, reporting to Morris Sievert, President. He was responsible for all manufacturing activities in all five plants in San Diego. He left in 1981 after Caterpillar bought Solar Turbines. He served on the board of directors for the California Manufacturers Association from 1977 – 1980. He retired from Accurex in Mountain View, CA, as President of their sustainable energy manufacturing entity.
He moved to Poway in 1978. He lived there, with a stint in San Jose during the 1980s, and later in Oaks North area of Rancho Bernardo. He was an avid golfer and gardener. He was a member of Vista Valley C.C., Stone Ridge C.C. and Rancho Bernardo C.C. After moving to Oaks North, he played in several men's leagues at the Oaks North golf course. He moved to Remington Club in 2010 and to Huntington Beach in 2011.
He is survived by his wife, Eloise of Huntington Beach CA; daughter, Diane Drewery and son-in-law, Don Wilks, of New York City; stepchildren, Suzanne (William) Simmons of Kenosha, WI, and Michael (Janet) McGhee who live in Belize; grandson, Paul (Jenna) Snider of Santa Ana, CA; another grandson in Tucson, AZ; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister and two brothers; and his younger daughter, Pattilyn Drewery of Anchorage, Alaska, who died in 1991.
A private memorial service will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.
