Margaret C. Shaffer

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL: Margaret C. Shaffer, "Peggy," formerly of Worthington, OH and currently of Port Charlotte, FL passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2013.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Edwin F. Shaffer; her daughter Susan M. Smith (Bill) of Upper St. Clair, PA; son Edwin M. Shaffer of Columbus, OH; and four loving grandchildren; Katherine (Mike) McNutt of Columbus, OH, Elliot Shaffer of Brooklyn, NY, Alison Shaffer of Columbus, OH, and Andrew Smith of Rye, NY. Her only sister, Frances M. Gaunce, preceded her in death in 1980.

Margaret was born on September 14, 1924 in Toledo, OH to the late Clara (Camper) and Frank J. Mitchell. Upon graduating from Port Clinton High School in 1942 she attended Allegheny College. She graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in social work, where she also was a member of Chi Omega sorority.

In December of 1946 she married Edwin F. Shaffer of Upper Arlington, OH. He had recently returned from service in Europe with the combat engineers in WWII. The newlyweds settled in Worthington, OH where Peggy actively participated in many volunteer and service organizations: Women's Club, Scouting, Historical Society, Riverside Hospital, and Beaux Arts. She loved to study family genealogy and was a passionate reader. In addition, she was employed for 5 years by the Fraternity Manager's Association at OSU.

She considered her most gratifying experiences as being a loving mother and wife. Her gentle smile and kind heart will forever be missed by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the , Ohio Central Region, 5555 Frantz Rd., Dublin, OH 43017.

A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Potter Chapel of the Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 High St., Worthington, OH.
