SHELBYVILLE, IN: Christian Frederick "Fred" Owen, 83, of Shelbyville, former Port Clinton resident, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013 at his residence.

He was born March 27, 1930, to Noah Abdon Owen and Eva Marie (Hulbert) Owen in Erie, Penn. He married Irene (Brechbuhler) Homan Stainbrook Owen March 3, 2007, and she survives. He previously married Dorothy (Knapp) Owen April 21, 1951, and she preceded him in death December 1, 1989 He married Beverly (Glunt) Owen December 19, 1991, and she preceded him in death February 17, 2000.

Other survivors include son, David (wife, Gina) Owen of Piqua, Ohio; daughters, Kathleen (husband, Ace) Hughes of Castalia, Ohio, Karen (husband, David) Hendershot of Canton, Ohio and Diana (husband, Ben) Layton of Monterey, Tenn.; stepchildren, Beverly Freeman of Salida, Colo., Fonda (husband, Charles) Wheeler of Madison, Tenn, and Gary Homan of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters, Naomi Myers of Union City, Penn. and Florence (husband, Ray) Sopp of Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jeff Zunk, Jason Zunk, Jesse Hendershot, Reid Owen, Trent Owen and Brandi Armendariz; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and eight brothers and sisters.

Mr, Owen was a resident of this area for 30 years after moving from Port Clinton, Ohio. He graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1947 and attended Western Reserve College of Cleveland, Ohio for two years. He was a superintendent at U.S. Gypsum in Gypsum, Ohio, retiring in 1983 after 32 years of service. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years* Fred enjoyed woodworking, building guitars, gardening and bird-watching. He was an avid folk singer and songwriter performing at several local venues and nursing homes. He also participated in several charities.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, Shelbyville, IN 46176, Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m, Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ian Farnsley officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, Sister Pat Edelweiss Decatur County Home for Boys or Jennings County Council on Domestic Violence in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared at
