OAK HARBOR: Phyllis A. Schumaker, 76, of Oak Harbor, died Thursday evening, May 23, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family.

Phyllis was born June 12, 1935, in Port Clinton, Ohio, to Merlin E. and Hazel M. (Kleinhans) Besso. On April 23, 1955, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Port Clinton, she married Roland G. Schumaker, and he preceded her in death on October 26, 2004. Phyllis worked in banking as a customer service representative for 25 years, retiring in 1997. She also helped her husband and his brother operate the Homeville Fruit Farm and served as clerk for Erie Township for several years.

Phyllis was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oak Harbor, where she was a former altar guild member. She volunteered at Magruder Hospital, was a former Girl Scout leader and was a member of the Mother of Twins Club. Phyllis enjoyed knitting, reading and jigsaw puzzles; but most of all, she loved being with her family and traveled often to spend time with them.

Her survivors include: children, Beth Ann (Allan) Thorpe of Bainbridge Island, WA, David Schumaker of Tallahassee, FL, Wayne (China Rosario) Schumaker of Las Vegas, NV, Judi (Peter) McAlenney of Danville, VT, and Billy (Amydelle) Schumaker of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Hannah and Holly Thorpe, Sarah Beth, Katie and Molly McAlenney, Mason, Penelope and Tuesday Schumaker; step grandchildren, Whitney and Sara Cochran and Madison Solso; and step-great granddaughter, Isabella Nemecek.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband; and brother, Eugene Besso.

The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 p.m., Monday, May 28, 2012, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor, with interment to follow at LaCarpe Cemetery, Lacarne. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m., Sunday, May 27, 2012, at Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Oak Harbor.
