Willie Lee Acoff Sr.(1929 - 2015)

Acoff Sr., Willie Lee Was born March 4, 1929 to the late Turner Acoff and Cora Carlisle in Bessemer, Alabama. The family moved to Gary, Indiana and he attended Roosevelt High School. In 1946 he married his childhood sweetheart Yvonne Harris, to this union eight children were born, Carol, Willie Jr., Ronald, Michael, Kenneth, Tyrone, Anthony and Gregory. His daughters, Brenda and Carol were born in Alabama. Willie was a faithful member of First Baptist church, serving on the Usher Board. He was active in numerous ventures from singing with Rev. Milton Joiner, Joiners 5 Trumpets, to presiding over the Ebonite Men's Club and the Gentleman Unlimited. Along with his wife Yvonne they ran Creative Daycare. Willie was an avid card player. He was also a connoisseur of wine making and his wife made preserves. Willie retired from U.S. Steel Corp with 40 years of service and went on to work for Laidlaw Corp. for another 20 years. He and his friend Tan Stevens were partners in several business venues. He was preceded in death by his parents, Turner and Cora Acoff; wife of 61 years, Yvonne; children, Carol, Willie Jr., Tyrone and Kenneth Acoff. Willie exchanged time for eternity December 31, 2014. He leaves to cherish fond memories 4 devoted and caring sons, Ronald, Michael, Anthony and Gregory; and daughter, Brenda; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Willie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. All services at First Baptist Church, 626 W. 21st Ave., Gary, IN on Saturday, January 10, 2015. Family Hour from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with Memorial services at 11:00 a.m.
