Cleo Wesson Obituary
Cleo Wesson 90, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015. Graduate of Roosevelt High School Class of 1943, and later attended Gary Business College. Cleo was veteran of the U.S. Army (W.W. II) and honorably discharged. Cleo was a member of Israel C.M.E. Church, Board member, Treasurer, member of Men's Fellowship Committee and recipient of its "Man of the Year" award. He worked at Standard Oil (Amoco BP) Refinery as a chemical production operator and sales representative for Standard Liquors (Gary Wine Spirits) until his retirement at the age of 80. Concurrently he served on the Gary Common Council for nearly 40 years, Precinct and Vice Committee man, Fifth District Councilman, delegate to the State Democratic Convention, Secretary of the Lake County Democratic Central Committee. His tenure and commitment earned him the title of "Dean of the Gary Common Council." He was one of the first recipients of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns Meritorious Service Award. Cleo was also a 33rd Degree Mason, pass Potentate of Mahomet Temple #134, Past Commander-in-Chief of Magic City Consistory #62, Past Master of King Solomon Lodge #59 and member of the Rebecca Chapter (OES) #39. Cleo was a life member of the N.A.A.C.P., recipient of the Drum Major Award, Marchers Award presented by the Frontiers Service Club and the Great Award. Cleo was preceded in death by his parents W.C. and Sophenia (Nelson) Wesson, wife Julia, 3 brothers Rhanders J. (Clarine), Leon Clay, John Rufus (Barbara) and sister Charlene V. (Robert) Thomas. Fond memories will be cherished by his loving daughter Helayne Wesson-Perkins; grandson Jordan Perkins both of Renton, WA; brother-in-law Robert (Earletta) Turner of Farmington, MI; Sisters-in-law Maxine Wesson of South Bend, IN, Mary Turner, Delores Turner, Velma Willis, Mildred Harris and Charlene Turner all of Gary, IN, Arnetta (Marvin) Spinks of Trussville, AL and a host of other relatives and dear friends. Devoted caregivers Lillie McElroy, Carol Greene, Jannel Walls, Yvonne Irvin, Noel Dolton, Dominique Burns, Faith Myricks, Cynthia McElroy, Sharon Haskins and Patricia Donaldson. Special thanks to Harbor Lights Hospice.Visitation Friday, June 5, 2015 from 12 to 8:00p.m. with Masonic Rites at 6 p.m. Family Hour from 7 to 8:00p.m. at the Guy & Allen Chapel, 2959 W. 11th Ave. Gary, IN. Funeral services Saturday June 6, 2015 at Israel C.M.E. Church, 2301 Washington St. Gary, IN. Rev. Stephanie A. Welsh, officiating. Interment Evergreen Memorial Park, Hobart, IN.
