Hallie Newell Obituary
Hallie King Newell made her transition on February 23, 2015. She was born in Pelahatchie, Mississippi in a peaceful pecan grove on January 25, 1931 to Queen Esther King and Haney M. Dotson. She spent her formative years with Robert and Annie King, her grandparents, in Pelahatchie, Mississippi. During her childhood, she was surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends that she loved and adored. Hallie began her education at the Harbor School. She attended high school at Lanier High School in Jackson, Mississippi and graduated from Cameron Street High School in Canton, Mississippi. Upon graduating from high school, her undergraduate studies were completed at Jackson College for Negro Teachers where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Her graduate studies were completed at Indiana University School of Education. During this time span, Hallie met the love of her life, Eli Newell. They wed in Mississippi on November 24,1955. Their love affair lasted 57 years. Hallie was a lifelong educator. She began teaching at the age of 16. She completed her student teaching and began her early teaching career in Mississippi. Her career spanned over four decades in three states. After teaching in the Mississippi School System for eight years, she worked in the Chicago School System for three years before moving to Gary, Indiana. While a resident of Gary, she taught at Ivanhoe Elementary School for 33 years. She retired from the Gary Community School Corporation in June of 2001. During her tenure at Ivanhoe Elementary School, she touched many young lives, and was recognized on numerous occasions for her award winning teaching style that shaped and molded the aspirations of her pupils. In her spare time, Hallie loved to visit with friends, network with colleagues, and travel. She had a rich and varied social life, which included active membership in the Cantonian Club and the Jacksonian Club of Gary. Also, she was an active volunteer at both Trinity Lutheran Church and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Hallie not only loved educating children, she always found time to mentor and assist others in their time of need with sage advice and a hug. She was preceded in death by her late husband Eli Newell. She is survived by Daryl (Verlena) of Chicago, Illinois and their children (Daryl Isaac and Grant Eli George); Jose (Cherise) of Chicago, Illinois and their children (Nigel King and Nyla Katherine) and Peggie Jolley Omolara of Brandon, Mississippi and her daughter (Miyoshi). Also, she leaves behind Sylvester Dotson (brother) and Norieta Clincy (sister). In addition to her immediate family, left to cherish her memory are numerous cousins from the King, Kelly, Irvin and Dotson families that were like her brothers and sisters. In addition, she leaves behind other loving family members, friends, and the many people she touched personally and professionally. Visitation Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 12 noon to 8:00 p.m. Family hours 6-8:00 p.m. at the Guy & Allen Chapel 2959 W. 11th Avenue. Funeral services Monday, March 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church 2235 W. 10th Avenue. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary, Indiana.
