Rev. Dr. Alfred Lewis Johnson of Gary, IN transitioned to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at the age of 69. He was born to Frank Johnson and Gloria Watson Johnson on August 1, 1947 in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest sister, Vivian Frances Johnson. Upon graduating from Tolleston High School in 1965, he attended Valparaiso University before joining the United States Army where he received an Honorable Discharge. After his discharge, he returned to Valparaiso University to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music. Continuing to pursue his love for education, he received his Doctorate Degree from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, Illinois. Later, he re-enlisted in the United States Army, serving as Chaplain and retiring as Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Johnson is survived by his wife A'Lelia and children: Jeanetta (Cory) Fortez, Brian (Krista) Johnson, and Alfred Jr. (LaToya) Johnson; grandchildren: Norah Irene Johnson, Wesley David Johnson, and Alfred III Johnson; sisters: Janice Dorsey, Marcella Gregory; nieces: Sonja Jackson, Renae Brantley, LaJuana Butler, and Margaret Woods; nephews: Bradley Clark Jr., Lance Gregory Jr.; godson: Ryan Cain. He also leaves a host of relatives and friends. Services for celebrating the life of Rev. Dr. Alfred Lewis Johnson will take place on Friday, August 19, 2016, at St. Timothy Community Church, 1600 W 25th Ave., Gary, IN. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 10:45 am, with funeral services immediately following at 11:00 am. Burial will occur on Monday, August 22, 2016, at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.
