Fiji spent her childhood in Alton where she attended school, and graduated from Alton High School. She confessed Christ at a very early age and was baptized at Union Baptist Church. She moved to Gary and was united in holy wedlock to Joseph Spivey. To this union, one son, Randolph was born. After marriage, Fiji joined St John Baptist Church. Fiji's inquiring mind was nurtured in high school and continued when she enrolled in college. She earned an Associate Degree from Indiana University N.W, a B.S Degree from St. Joseph's college, and a M.S Degree from Indiana University. Her love for children and her dedication to the molding of the lives of children led to her first teaching assignment in 1964 at Lincoln School. Later, she moved to Duncan School where she remained for 30 years. She was honored for her outstanding service in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" in 1992. During her lifetime, she was active in many civic, professional and social organizations which included the following: The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Gary Reading Council, Association for Childhood Education, American Federation of Teachers, American Consumer Association and the Indiana retired Teachers Association.
