Fred D. Steele passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 10:24 a.m. Fred was the first born of fourteen to the late William P. Steele and Rillie Steele on December 29, 1923. Fred was born in Calhoun County, MS. He later moved to Missouri where he attended Hermondale High School until drafted into the US Army (WWII) in 1943. After serving three years, he was honorably discharged in 1946 and moved to Gary, IN. During his stay in Gary, Fred worked in the Building Trade and later retired from Gary Housing Authority in 1989. Fred was a long-time member of Delaney United Methodist Church which later merged and became Christ United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Methodist Men's group. He married the love of his life Annie Steele in 1989 whom preceded him in death in 2010. Fred loved reading scriptures, gardening, playing cards, watching sports and spending time with family. Fred was preceded in death by: brothers, Lloyd, Floyd, George and Willie Steele; and sisters, Marrion Green and Laura Joiner. He leaves to cherish his memories a loving devoted daughter LaShawn (Leonard Jr) Jones and through marriage brought about a blended family of 12 children to whom he considered his own - Gregory (Chelsie) Fayson, LaTanza (Tami) Thomas, John (Yvonnie) Fayson Jr., Shirley (Tommie) Fayson-Miles, Johnetta Fayson-Whiteside, TL Morrow, Alice Morrow, Doris Morrow, Bonnie Morrow, Royal (Theresa) Fayson, Thelma Johnson and Augustine Pirtle. 37 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is survived by 3 sisters, Guise Lemon, Argie Alice (Franklin) Dozier, Katherine (Robert) Brooks, 4 brothers, Eugene (Beatrice) Steele, Julius Carnell Steele, Joe (Elizabeth) Steele, Aaron (Alfreda) Steele, special brother-in-law Willie Green and friends. Funeral Service will be on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Christ United Methodist Church located at 201 W. Ridge Road. Viewing of body at 9 a.m. and funeral at 11 a.m. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.

What an amazing man. He definitely lived a full life. He served this country, took care of his family, and had a great relationship with God! I know you're watching over us with Grandma at your side! We miss you on earth, but know we'll see you again!

I was so sorry to hear of Fred's passing! He was my Father Julius Taylor's best Friend! He was my Godfather when I was a little Girl! He will be missed! Praying for God to give you all strength to go through this storm! Rest in Heaven Fred!I love you!
