HAZEL LUCILLE WHITLOCK GRAY Hollywood, Florida Formerly of Gary, Indiana Age 91, former long time Gary resident, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of June 17, 2006, at her home in Hollywood, FL. Born Dec. 31, 1914, Mrs. Gray was brought to Gary when her parents, Arthur Brown (A.B.) and Elmyra Diffay Whitlock relocated there from Chicago in 1916 at the behest of Rev. William H. Whitlock, Mrs. Gray's paternal grandfather, who had started Trinity Methodist Church there. Mrs. Gray attended Roosevelt elementary school, and was a 1930 graduate of Froebel High School. After receiving her B.A. degree from North Carolina A & T State University in 1934, she returned to Gary where over the years she worked as a social worker, a public school teacher, a probation officer, and later, a physical therapist at Norton Park School for Crippled Children. She became a member of Delta Sigma Theta and a Chapter Member of Alpha Mu at North Carolina A & T, and Beta Nu. She was a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. Her marriage in 1942 to Gary attorney, the late Terry C. Gray, ended in divorce in the early 1960's, and in 1964, she moved her family to Chicago. While in Chicago, Mrs. Gray entered the world of business and became a civic activist. She marched in anti-racism and anti-war protests and personally confronted the late Mayor Richard J. Daley over Chicago's failure to pass and enforce gun control laws. Mrs. Gray is survived by one sister, Mrs. Arthella Allison of Maui, Hawaii; three children, Elmyra Gray Powell (James) of Birmingham, AL, Oscar T. Gray (Gail) of Gary, and Sarah Gray Freeburg of Hollywood, FL; ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom remember her loving presence, her lively intellect and her ceaseless spirit of adventure. One sister, Mrs. Rosa Morgan of Washington, D.C., passed away on June 27, 2006. An Omega Omega service will be held at 12:15 p.m., followed by a memorial celebration of her life at 1:00 p.m. on July 29, 2006, at St. Augustine's Church, 2425 West 19th Ave., Gary, IN 46404.
