Mother Jessie Johnson Hence, 98, of Gary, Indiana transitioned into eternity on February 21, 2017. On Christmas Day, 1918, she was born to Carliss and Rosie Johnson in Ripley, Tennessee. Jessie was preceded in death by her parents. Of their ten children, Jessie was the last living sibling. Jessie leaves to cherish her memory her six children, Rosie V. Smith, Myrtle L. Murphy, Charles (Shirley) Hence, Delores (Eddie) Sistrunk, Larry C. Hence, and Arthur L. (Gloria) Terry Sr.; 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.Jessie was employed for many years by the Gary Community School Corporation and retired as a custodian. She was a hard working and faithful employee. Jessie was a longtime member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Gary, IN where she served as president of the Senior Choir. Jessie was a dedicated mother to her children and grandchildren. She was also known to be a firm disciplinarian, an excellent homemaker and a wonderful cook.All Services will be held at New Bethel Fellowship C.O.G.I.C., 110 W. 43rd Avenue, Gary, IN on Saturday, March 4, 2017 with Superintendent Kevin Warren, officiating. Visitation will be held from 9-10 am and Family Hour from 10-11:00a.m. The Funeral Services will be immediately following at 11:00a.m. Interment at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, 3815 W. 39th Avenue, Hobart, IN.

I remember Ms. Hence when she was a choir member in the Gospel Chorus at Jerusalem. She would not buy the Pink & Burgandy robe and instead she made herself a pink dress. She said that she wasn't buying another robe and she didn't.

Resolution to the Family of
Mother Jessie Johnson Hence
Remembrance - Love's Greatest Gift; Love - God Greatest Gift

We, the officers and members of the Roosevelt High School Class of 1967 Alumni Association desire to place on record, that it is with deep sadness that we express our grief and deepest sympathy to classmate Larry Hence and the family on the homegoing of your mother, Mother Jessie Johnson Hence.

WHEREAS, we believe the words of Jesus in John 14 that encourages us to Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we embrace the family because all of us have a common bond that will connect us for the rest of our lives through Jesus Christ.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that our prayers go out to the children, other family members, relatives and friends as well as the family of faith uphold and encourage you in the coming weeks and months that earth hath no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. We commend the soul of Mother Jessie Johnson Hence to the Panther Den Eternal.
