Mattie Ruth Johnson, born December 19,1927 in Opelousas, LA to the late William H. Dunleavy Sr., and Adeline D. ( Henry) Dunleavy. Mattie made the transition from her life on earth to her new home with Christ on Monday July 2, 2018 from Golden Living Nursing Home in Merrillville, Indiana where she had been resident for over 5 ½ years. Mattie attended Froebel High School and was part of the graduating Class of 1946. She married Jesse Charles Johnson in 1947. From this union, 3 children were born, Linda Ruth, Michael Wayne and Alan Howard. During her employment years, Mattie worked at U.S. Steel Corp. In Gary, RR Donnelly & sons in Chicago, IL, Avon Cosmetics, Micallyn Leather Goods Company in Chicago and Baker Chevrolet in Gary until she became ill. Mattie was a devout Catholic all of her life. She grew up a member of St. Monica's Catholic Church and St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Her faith in our Lord Jesus Christ was unmeasurable. Her passion and love for her family, friends and people in general was a godsend. She enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking, art and craft work and being a loving grandmother and great grandmother. Mattie was preceded in death by her parents William Henry Dunleavy Sr. and Adeline Delores Dunleavy, 1 brother William Henry Dunleavy Jr., aunt Ruth Henry-Burleigh and uncle Alvin Burleigh. She leaves to cherish her loving memory 1 daughter Linda R. (Charles) Watson of Gary and2 sons Michael W. (Verna) Johnson of Gary and Alan H. (Dianna) Johnson of Gary, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Mattie's warm smile and kind ways will truly be missed. Visitation Wednesday, July 11, 2018 from 12 noon to 8:00 p.m. with family hour at 7:00 p.m. at the Guy & Allen Chapel, 2959 W. 11th Ave. Gary, IN. Funeral service Thursday, July 12, 2018 at St. Monica/St. Luke Catholic Church, 645 Rhode Island St. Gary, IN at 11:00 a.m. The repast will be at the church.
