Richard Simon, age 73 was born in New Bern Al. Nov 27th 1943. He moved to Gary IN with his family in Oct 1967, and joined Van Buren Baptist church where he was a faithful member and deacon, member of the choir as well as the united male chorus. Richard was actively involved in Brothers Keeper Shelter for homeless men. He retired from U.S. Steel in 2003 after 36 years. He also worked for Wise Way super market. Preceded in death by grandparents, his mother Willie M. Simon, father Richard Daniel, sister Elestine Simon, brothers Willie Simon and Charlie Simon. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara, daughters Robin Simon and Kimberly Vinegar, sons Christopher Simon and Steven Simon, granddaughter Kayla Vinegar, grandsons Clem Vinegar and Kobe Vinegar, great granddaughter Mya Renea Mariner. Brothers Eddie Simon, Alan Daniels and Kerry Daniels. Sisters Earlie M. Hill, Mary Simon, Murlene Simon, Beatrice Williams, Eloise Ward, Erma Reaves and Lela Daniel and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation Friday, March 31, 2017 from 9-11:00a.m. with family hour from 10-11:00a.m. with Funeral Services to follow at 11:00a.m. all services at Van Buren Baptist church 2585 Van Buren St. Gary IN. 46407. Pastor Dwight E. Mobley officiating. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery.

Many fond memories working with Mr. Simon on the board of Brother's Keeper, men's homeless shelter. He was quiet most of the time but very passionate about his Savior and ministries he was involved with.

It was a pleasure and honor working with him!!!

Mr. Richard was a great man and mentor I got hired the same day at paylow and I never had a dull moment with him and a soak in all wisdom I could from him he will be miss and I salute him for all the great times we had

I am sorry to hear of Richards passing. I had the pleasure of working with him at Wiseway foods.Richard was a respectable man and a pleasant man.may god be with his family. His family did not lose a father,husband,brother they gained an angel.

I worked with Mr. Simon on the board of Brother's Keeper for a decade. He was a dedicated compassionate man to the cause of the homeless. I have fond memories of working with him and the staff at Brother's Keeper. God's Blessings on the family and friends. He will surely be missed but he is singing praises to God!!!

Barbara, Kim, Robin, Chris and Stevie, my deepest condolences to you during this time of transition. Deacon Simon was a unique individual who was the same every time you saw him. Pleasant and encouraging. Soror/daughter Kim, he will live on through that smile you inherited from him.
