Robert L. Nichols, "Bob" 79 passed away August 3, 2016 from a recent illness, a Gary native, Nichols recently retired as a bailiff for Lake Superior Court, Division 1, after five years. Before, that, he was investigator for the Lake County Prosecutor's Child Support Division in Gary. His first job as a bailiff was in 1983, working at Gary City Court under Judge Charles Graddick. He worked at Gary City Court until he retired in 2009. Nichols also worked as a US Steel billet mill inspector for 1959 to 1990 and was a griever and trustee for Steelworkers Union Local 1014. Nichols was a 1955 graduate of Froebel High School, where he played football and baseball and was a high school All-American in basketball. He attended St. Augustine College in Raleigh, NC but did not finish. He enlisted in the US Army serving as an adviser in Vietnam for two years. Nichols was active in the First Church of God. He was president of the men's organization, a member of the male chorus and a mentor in the church mentoring program. He was also a member of the outreach program for Brothers' Keeper, a men's shelter in Gary, and was vice president of the Police Athletic League and the Robert Buck Foundation. He volunteered in Gary City Court, tutoring people who are having trouble obtaining a driver's license. Robert is preceded in death by his father Percy L. Nichols Sr., mother Agastan Nichols, wife Claudia Nichols, brothers Gene Nichols, Berest Glen, sisters Dorothy Taylor, Elvie Nichols, Cynthia Nichols, Alberine (Cassius) Williams; aunt Myrl (Odies) Williams; grandson Michael Andre' Nichols Jr.; Brother Bob leaves precious memories to children Michael Andre' Nichols Sr., Vanessa Nichols; 3 sisters Etta Nichols, Faye Cunningham, Mary Ann Reedus; brother Percy Nichols Jr., 2 grandchildren Olivia Nichols, Sophia Nichols, aunt Edith Coleman, special friend Ms. Bernice Cole Thompson, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Visitation Monday, August 8, 2016 from 12 to 8pm family hours 6-8pm at the Guy & Allen Chapel, 2959 W. 11th Ave. Funeral service Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 11:00am at the First Church of God, 134 E. 43rd Ave; Officiating Pastor Jackie Drago. Interment at Evergreen Cemetery.
