Sammie Dent 92, of Gary, Indiana passed away peacefully at home on August 21, 2017. Sammie was born to the late Robert and Liliah Dent in Midway, AL. He served his country in the United States Navy honorably and nobly during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart among other ribbons. He was a devoted member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church for over 67 years. Sammie was a very proud member of the St. James M. B. Church Male Choir and the United Male Choir of Indiana since 1950. He joined Dorothy Dent in holy matrimony and was blessed to share 67 years together. Together they raised five beautiful children with the love and guidance of our Lord. He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, daughters Brenda Frye, Lynette Smith and Carolyn Wilson; son Howard Love and four grandchildren. Survivors left to cherish his memories one son Sammie M. (Chris) Dent; nine grandchildren; many great grandchildren and numerous family and friends. Visitation Tuesday August 29, 2017 from 12-8:00p.m. at the Guy & Allen Chapel. Funeral service Wednesday August 30, 2017 at 11:00a.m. at St. James M.B. Church 1333 W. 25th Avenue. Rev. James Robinson officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.
