Samuel W. Gates "Coach Gates", age 74, passed away October 3, 2018. He was a graduate of Froebel School class of 1963. Affectionately known as Sam or Coach Gates, he participated in basketball and baseball as a Blue Devil. After graduation, Sam was enlisted in the US Army where he served in the Vietnam War. Sam volunteered and coached at Midtown Biddy Basketball and Tolleston Little League Baseball. He is one of the Pioneers for AAU basketball in Northwest Indiana. Sam coached Northlake (Netbusters) 1992-1995, Northlake won back to back State AAU Championships 16 under (1994) and 17 under (1995). Sam later joined the Spiece Gym Rats Organization (Spiece Northwest Stars), where he won numerous titles. Sam taught the game the right way. Through his coaching and mentorship many young men were able to receive basketball scholarships. He was preceded in death by his parents Erskine and Mary Elizabeth Bogan Gates; Wife Jacquelyn D. Gates; Brothers, James Gates, Leon Gates, Erskine Gates, Alphonsia Gates, J.C. Gates, Sisters, Georgia Tipton, Mary White and Thelma Malrey. He leaves to cherish his memory: Beloved wife, Barbara Gates of; children, Anthony (Felicia) Gates, Cecilia Gates and Samuel (Brianna) Gates, Godson Arthur (Kelly) Gates, two Mothers in Law, Mattie Rhenwrick, and Earma L . Byndum, Brothers Jimmie Lee Gates, Robert (Mildred) Gates; Sister Islean Hunter; Sisters-in-law, Johnnie Ruth Gates, Diane Gates, Angelic (Erik) Bailey, LueRetha (Martin) Booker, Evelyn Rhenwrick, Gwen Rhenwrick, Michele (Eugene) Thomas, Brenda Byndum, Rhonda Byndum and Latanya Byndum; Brothers-in-law, Lafrance Rhenwrick, Clyde (Angie) Byndum Jr., Bernard Byndum of , and Jerry (Gloria) Dozier, dearest grandchildren LarRay Short (Ray), Anthony Gates II (Boss), Kayla Malone (Pooh) and Samuel Gates Jr. (Red); a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation Friday, October 12, 2018 from 12-8:00 p.m. Family hours 6-8:00 p.m. at the Guy & Allen Chapel, 2959 W. 11th Ave. Funeral service Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 1917 Carolina Street, Rev. W. N. Reed Officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.
