Lou Bertha Shields was born on April 4, 1925 in Noxapater, Mississippi to the union of George and Viola Beamon. Lou Bertha was the third child of seven born to George and Viola. She became a Christian early in life, at Mt. Pleasant # 2 Missionary Baptist Church. There she became a member of the usher board. In 1946, she left Mississippi for a better life in Gary, IN. Once in Gary she worked various waitress and housekeeping jobs. She met and married Thomas Shields. Lou Bertha worked for the former Slicks Laundry in Gary for several years until she became one of the 1st crossing guards to work under the supervision of the Gary Police Department, then later for the Gary School City Corporation for a total of 37 years. Lou Bertha became a member and was baptized again, in 1977 at New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev W.N. Reed. While there she was an active member of the Senior Usher Board, until her health first began to decline. Lou Bertha, or as most lovingly called her, "Miss Bertha", was an avid sports fan. "Miss Bertha" had a love for baseball and basketball. Her favorite teams were the Chicago Cubs, the Gary South Shore Railcats, and all the teams at Merrillville Little League.
