Thomas McDowell Obituary
Thomas Van McDowell, 90 transitioned to glory on October 22, 2015 peacefully in Cumming, Georgia surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 14, 1925 to Annie Mae and Tom McDowell (deceased) in Camden, AL. He is also preceded in death by one sister, Lille Ruth McDowell, and one brother, John Henry McDowell. Thomas graduated from high school in 1943. Following graduation, he served his country in the United States Army, during WWII. Earning an honorable discharge, Thomas graduated from Knoxville College, in Knoxville Tennessee, receiving a Baccalaureate of Science degree in Chemistry. In 1948 he was initiated into the Beta Phi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. In 1952, He moved to Gary and worked at US Steel Corporation for 28 years. In 1963, Thomas joined Frances Eldridge in holy matrimony. He leaves to cherish; wife Frances, one brother Charles (Nadine) McDowell of Gary. Three children. Diana Joy (Darryl) Hennington, of Chicago, IL. Rodney Van McDowell ,of Indianapolis, IN., and Erik (Melissa) McDowell, of Buford, GA. Five Grandchildren Michael McDowell, Robin (Corey) Reed, Erik S. McDowell, II, Matthew McDowell and Zachary McDowell. Three great grandchildren Iyanna , Nya, and Corey Jr. Later, he became first African-American executive for US Steel Corporation before retiring , in 1984. Thomas also worked as an educator for Gary Community School Corporation and fully retired in 1996. He was an active and supportive member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for 58 years before moving to Buford Georgia to be close to family. Visitation Wednesday, October 28, from Noon to 8pm. Family hour 6:30 - 8pm at the Guy & Allen Chapel. Home-going services, Thursday Oct. 29, at 10:00am at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 719 W. 25th Ave. Gary, IN. Reverend Maxwell Anokwute officiating. Internment, Fern Oak, Griffith, IN.
